People and Culture

Nxai Pan is a part of the Makgadikgadi Pans complex in northeastern Botswana, known for its vast salt pans and grasslands. While primarily a wildlife conservation area, Nxai Pan and its surroundings are also home to various indigenous peoples who have adapted to the harsh and dynamic environment of the pans. The Baines’ Baobabs are named after the 19th-century explorer and artist Thomas Baines, who painted these iconic trees during his travels. Nxai Pan National Park, as a protected area, is primarily focused on wildlife conservation and does not have a resident human population. However, Phuduhudu village, and the surrounding areas are home to indigenous communities with rich cultures and traditions. The cultural aspects of the people around Nxai Pan contribute to the overall experience for visitors to the region.
